Allison Holker Gets Real About Life After Tragedy

By: Keith Wagstaff · October 17, 2024 · Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance star Allison Holker knows about working through adversity. Before she appeared in High School Musical and danced her way to reality TV fame, she took dance classes after school as a teenager – and paid for them by cleaning the dance studio until nearly midnight.

“I missed out on weekends, I never got to play with friends, I never got to hang out,” Holker said on SoFi’s YouTube series Richer Lives. “It taught me discipline. It taught me that I love dance so much I was going to sacrifice my entire childhood because, to me, discipline is what really creates your self worth, your self love, and your self confidence.”

Speaking with Vivian Tu, aka Your Rich BFF, Holker talked about how she makes her money, what she does with it, and how she dealt with the tragic death of her late husband.

Moving Forward

Tragedy struck in 2022 when Holker’s husband, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, a successful dancer, choreographer, actor, and producer, died at 40 years old. Not only did Holker have to deal with the emotional pain after he passed, she had to create a financial plan.

“As I was grieving and trying to be patient with myself and also be a good parent to my three children and guide them through their grief, I was taking business meetings the very next day and having to hear about taxes that were owed or contracts that needed to be rewritten,” she said.

“It was really tough, but I was like, ‘You know what? No one else is gonna be able to do this for me.’” Ultimately, being productive and crossing things off her to-do list helped her cope with the pain and get her family’s finances on track.

Dream Jobs and Homes

These days, Holker spends more time judging dance competitions than dancing in them. She has also found other ways to bring in money.

“My major income source is brand deals and sponsorships,” she said. “You know, that is 70% of my income. It’s consistent and it’s only growing.”

And while she’s not a fixture on HGTV yet, she loves investing in real estate. “I always say that my skill with dance is that I am a storyteller,” she said. “When I buy homes, I still like to be a storyteller. I like to flip homes, create a feeling, and then Airbnb them out.”

She can also add author to her resume. Her book, Keep Dancing Through, was released by Disney Hyperion earlier this year.
