Being in a Wedding Has Become Too Expensive for Many

What Are Weddings Worth?

Getting asked to be in someone’s wedding party is an honor. But increasingly it’s also a financial decision.

Being a bridesmaid or groomsman may come with costs that aren’t obvious at first, from outfits, to pre-wedding events; these costs have gotten so high that nearly half of Americans now say they’d rather not be asked to join a wedding party at all, according to an Empower survey.

Budgeting for the Big Day

The average couple plans to spend just over $30,000 on their special day, while guests pay an average of nearly $175 on wedding gifts alone, Empower found. That’s without accounting for travel and lodging expenses. And if you have multiple loved ones getting married in the same season, these costs add up even more.

It’s okay to take a step back before accepting an invitation to be in a wedding party. Understand and consider the financial implications and associated costs before committing yourself.

Weddings have also gotten more costly for the happy couple, Quartz reports. Pent-up demand from pandemic-era delays means there are fewer venues available, and couples find themselves paying a higher rate to land a space. Despite rising costs, more than a quarter of couples are still willing to go into debt to pay for their wedding, Empower found.
