Sizing Up Your Super Bowl Party Costs

By: Kaydee Ambas · January 30, 2023 · Reading Time: 3 minutes

What’s Up?

The stage is set: the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Kansas City Chiefs on February 12 at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. And of course, Rihanna will be headlining the halftime show.

With the cheapest ticket priced above $5,000 and bars expected to be slammed, this is as good a year as any to enjoy the game from the comfort of your couch — or with a Super Bowl party.

Ticket prices aren’t the only expense skyrocketing. With overall food inflation up 11.8% since last year, you’d be justified in wondering if a party is worth the price tag — especially a party that is so dependent on snacks.

But good news! The prices of some classic snacks have fallen in recent months.

What’s Down?

A few fan favorites are down in price this year. A pound of chicken wings is 22% cheaper right now than it was in January 2022, thanks to a surge in supply. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, US Department of Agriculture, since the last big game:

•   Wing prices dropped from $3.38 to $2.28 per pound

•   Sirloin steak prices dropped almost $1 per pound

•   Shrimp prices dropped 17% to $3.78 per pound

•   The average avocado price dropped 20%

Personally, I’ll be making a lot of guac.

Planning Your Party

Shopping at discount grocers like Aldi or Grocery Outlet (GO) is another way to save on party snacks. Or, consider buying generic brands from your go-to grocery store instead of big name products — your guests may not even be able to tell the difference.

At the end of the day, estimating the total cost of your party will depend on how many people you invite and how much your guests eat. But the decreased prices for chicken wings and guac could certainly go a long way toward pleasing both your guests and your budget.

Make a budget and stick to the game plan, and your party might just see an immaculate reception.
