The Wage Gap for Hispanic Women Has Grown Again

By: Anneken Tappe · October 08, 2024 · Reading Time: < 1 minute

Hispanic women in the U.S. still earn significantly less than White, non-Hispanic men, and it is an economic burden for their households.

As of 2023, the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) found that Hispanic women working full-time and year-round were paid 58 cents for every dollar paid to White, non-Hispanic men. More significant still: Hispanic women experience a wage gap no matter their educational attainment. When part-time workers were added to the mix, Latinas were making only 51 cents for every dollar earned by their White male counterparts.

Ramifications

This considerable wage gap has long-term ramifications when it comes to life-time earnings, household wealth, and economic opportunity. The losses in cents on the dollar add up over time, says the NWLC. Doing the math results in $32,070 a loss per year, which may weigh heavy on financial burdens like housing, child care, and other necessities. And that also affects these women’s ability to build household wealth over time.

The NWLC has called for more investment into building an economic and social infrastructure for Hispanic women to thrive.
