Want This High-Demand Job? Head West

By: Anneken Tappe · September 10, 2024 · Reading Time: 2 minutes

Changing Landscape

The U.S. job market has gone through a lot of changes in the years since the pandemic, from remote work, to industries adjusting to providing services in a different way. But there are other forces at work that are reshaping the labor market.

As the nation is embracing renewable energies and electrification, certain jobs are becoming increasingly sought after.

Winds of Change

Alongside roles in emerging industries, trade jobs are also gaining popularity. And one of the fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. checks both boxes: wind turbine service technicians.

Employment for wind turbine techs could grow by 60% in the next decade or so, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates.

But workers who want to capitalize on this growing demand may need to relocate. The wind energy industry has a large presence in the American West and Great Plains, where high-speed winds occur regularly. Wind-related jobs are most concentrated in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Colorado, per the Department of Energy and Census Bureau data cited by Axios.

High Demand

While demand for wind turbine techs is on the rise, it still remains muted relative to other roles. As of 2023, they accounted for only around 11,400 roles nationwide, per BLS data. But with nearly 7,000 more expected to be added by 2033, employment in the position is projected to grow at a faster rate than any other U.S. job.
