Back To (Personal Finance) School with SoFi

The school year may look a little different this year, but there is still plenty of learning to be had online.

For many, one of the classes often missing from the school syllabus is one centered around personal finances. According to a recent SoFi survey1, we found that 47% of people admitted to needing help when it comes to understanding and taking control of their personal finances. So, this Fall, we’re taking people of all ages back to school—with classes to help our ambitious members feel more confident about their money. For the next five weeks, our SoFi Financial Planners will be hosting a series of virtual webinar classes on a variety of personal finance topics, so grab your notepads, pens, pencils and take a look at your syllabus below:

Class 1: Getting a handle on your personal finances
Wednesday, September 9 @ 12pm PT/3pm ET

2020 has been a year filled with many unexpected factors and it’s no wonder that 75% of people surveyed admitted to feeling anxious about money in the current COVID-19 environment. To kick-off our series, Brian Walsh, CFP® will walk through steps to take today to help you get a handle on your personal finances. He will share tips and insight on what to look for, how to organize, and how to make sure you’re understanding your situation.

Class 2: Managing your debt
Wednesday, September 16 @ 12pm PT/3pm ET

Our survey found that 43% of people have a goal of paying off existing debt in the next five years. During this webinar Lauren Anastasio, CFP® will help you understand how to use debt responsibly, and showcase tips and tricks on how to prioritize your debts in order to pay down existing debt more efficiently.

Class 3: Investing 101
Wednesday, September 23 @ 12pm PT/3pm ET

Entering the market and becoming a first-time investor can be intimidating—so much so that many people simply avoid it all together. Our survey found that 34% of consumers need help understanding investing and the stock market and 42% aim to make more money by investing in the next five years. In this session, Brian Walsh, CFP® will share tips and insights on how you can align your goals with your investment approach, develop a strategy to stay the course during volatile markets, and focus on the most important aspects for your long-term strategy.

Class 4: Home Ownership
Wednesday, September 30 @ 12pm PT/3pm ET

Home buying is one of life’s major milestones and for many it’s the largest financial commitment they’ll ever make. First-time home buyers can face a number of challenges, such as decreased housing inventory, increased competition, and financial barriers like student loan debt and limited credit history. In this webinar Lauren Anastasio, CFP® will give you knowledge and tools you need in order to overcome those obstacles and make home ownership a reality. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of how much home you can afford, what your timeline realistically looks like, and steps you can start taking to make sure you’re ready to make an offer!

Class 5: College Planning
Wednesday, October 7 @ 12pm PT/3pm ET

College is talked about as being the best years of your life, but it comes at a cost. From the lengthy application process to paying for it, we’ve designed this webinar to help give you insight on the financial aspects of higher education. In this session, Brian Walsh, CFP® will discuss various ways to save for college, how to evaluate 529 Savings Plans, and different methods to evaluate your return on education.

You can tune into the webinars by registering at the above links, and if you miss a session, no worries! We’ll be spark noting each session so be sure to check back on the SoFi blog for detailed recaps each week. And of course, if you want to learn more or create a special plan for yourself you can schedule a session with one of our SoFi Financial Planners here.
