Elon Musk’s Neuralink to Unveil New Technology Today
A Highly Anticipated Demo
Elon Musk announced that Neuralink, his neurotech company, will unveil a device it’s developing at 6 PM ET today. Though there are many unanswered questions about today’s demo, the company will likely show off some type of brain-machine interface, or BMI.
Elon Musk is vocal about his belief that BMI devices are necessary to help human brains keep up with artificial intelligence. Neuralink is focusing on a first step that could eventually lead to this way of supplementing the way humans think.
Neuralink’s Work
Neuralink is developing an implant that would allow people to use their brains to control computers or phones. The company is also working to build a “sewing machine-like” robot that can perform the task of inserting BMI devices into people’s brains.
Neuralink scientists are finding ways to connect people’s brains to technology with electrodes that are thinner than a strand of hair. The company hopes that eventually, the process of installing these BMIs will be as simple as Lasik eye surgery.
Looking Ahead
BMIs have a myriad of possible applications. They could be life-changing for people who have been paralyzed or have neurological disorders.
However, despite the many ways they could make life easier, some people have voiced concerns about blurring the lines between people’s brains and technology. If this technology became widespread, there would be a number of ethical questions to deal with, such as questions about privacy and equality of access.
