“Financially Ever After” with Esther Perel, Lauren Speed-Hamilton and Cameron Hamilton

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many individuals and couples to adjust to a new way of life, bringing on an array of stresses – from financial, physical, mental, or all of the above. B.C. (before COVID), money was a sticky spot in relationships for most, and according to our recent survey1 almost half of the people surveyed have felt added stress in their relationships during this time, which is understandable. Since we’re in the business of helping our members get their money right, we want to see how we can help our member couples find their “financially ever after”, together.

That’s why we’re hosting a digital event, “Financially Ever After”, with co-hosts Lauren Speed-Hamilton and Cameron Hamilton from Netflix’s hit show Love Is Blind and special guest Esther Perel , a renowned relationship therapist, bestselling author and podcast host of Where Should We Begin? You can catch it at any time and rewatch the event here .

Esther Perel brings her relationship expertise to conduct workshops with two SoFi member couples that explores the role that money plays in their relationships, while providing insightful tips that are applicable to all couples. In the first workshop, Esther helps SoFi Ambassador couple Anthony and Jhanilka navigate the classic case of what happens when a “spender” falls in love with a “saver”. She helps them understand the root cause of these mentalities and how to meet in the middle to set themselves up for a successful financial future. The second workshop with SoFi Ambassadors Eric and Alexis explores one person being the caretaker in a relationship and how that impacts the way they approach their finances. Esther helps the couple better understand why it’s important for them to have a sense of freedom, while also being appreciative of one another’s contributions.

And if you binged Netflix’s Love Is Blind at the beginning of quarantine, you’ll remember watching the relationship of Lauren Speed-Hamilton and Cameron Hamilton unfold. We know Cameron got down on one knee, Lauren said yes, and they both enjoyed their “happily ever after”, but what happened after the cameras stopped rolling? Now, for the first time ever, they’re going to get real about their finances and discuss how being transparent with money has been an important cornerstone of their relationship, even from the very beginning. And if we’re lucky, maybe they’ll spill some tea on Love is Blind.

Now couldn’t be a more perfect time for us to help our members tackle the “money talk” in their relationship. Our survey found that 47% of couples feel that COVID-19 has made talking about finances with their partner easier. 50% of respondents shared that they have a designated person in the relationship who pays the bills, while only 28% shared that they handle them together. And, when it comes to financial deal breakers in a relationship, spending habits that don’t align is at the top (30%), followed by the inability to manage finances (22%). All factors to consider when eyeing your “financially ever after”!
