A Jade Lizard is an advanced options strategy that requires taking three different positions. It is a slightly bullish strategy typically used by traders who want to profit from high levels of market volatility.

Traders who use the Jade Lizard strategy must monitor their position and have a plan for exit to avoid the potential for significant losses. The maximum profit for a Jade Lizard strategy is the initial premium received when opening the trade.

What Is a Jade Lizard Option Strategy?

With a Jade Lizard trade, you will enter into three different options positions on the same underlying stock through your brokerage account. The first two positions require selling a call spread, which involves selling a call option at one strike price and buying a call option with the same expiration at a higher strike price. The third and final option position is a put at an even lower strike price.

With a Jade Lizard, these options are usually at out-of-the-money strike prices. The strikes should be selected such that the total premium received from selling the call spread and selling the put option are greater than the width of the call spread. Don’t worry — if it’s not clear what that means, we’ll illustrate in the example that follows.

How Does a Jade Lizard Work?

A Jade Lizard option trade is a neutral to bullish options strategy, which means that you should anticipate the price of your underlying stock to stay the same or go up. With a Jade Lizard options strategy, you are hoping to capture the premium that comes with higher levels of implied volatility, so the ideal environment to execute the trade is one where volatility is elevated.

Setting Up a Jade Lizard

When you set up a Jade Lizard, you should initially be collecting premium from both the call spread and put that you are selling. The key concept of setting up a Jade Lizard is that you want the total amount of premium that you collect initially to be more than the width of your call spread.

As an example, say that stock ABC is trading around $60. You could sell a 58/62/63 Jade Lizard, at these hypothetical prices, on options expiring in 30 days:

•   Sell ABC 62 Call for 1.25

•   Buy ABC 63 Call for 0.90

•   Sell ABC 58 Put for 0.75

Your net credit is $1.10 ($1.25 minus $0.90 plus $0.75), so you collect $110 for each contract that you implement (since one contract typically controls 100 shares of the underlying stock). In our example, you have no risk should the stock move to the upside. To illustrate how, suppose the stock trades above 63 on expiration day. The put option expires worthless, and your maximum loss on the call spread is $100, which is less than the $110 you collected up front. On the other hand, you do have nearly unlimited downside risk if the underlying stock goes to 0. This is the main reason that the Jade Lizard options strategy only makes sense for stocks where you have a neutral to bullish outlook.

Maximum Profit

You will achieve your maximum profit if the options expire with the underlying stock having a price in between the strike price of your put option and the strike price of your lower call option. In our example above, if the stock closes between $58 and $62, then all three options expire worthless and your profit is the $1.10 in initial premium that you collected.

Maximum Loss

In a Jade Lizard strategy, you have nearly unlimited downside exposure, since you are selling a put option. A put option increases in value as the price of the underlying stock goes down. Since you are short the put option, as the stock price goes down you could be on the hook for the difference between the strike price of the put and the price of the underlying stock.

Breakeven Point

The breakeven point for a Jade Lizard on the downside is the difference between the strike price of the put option and the initial premium collected. In our earlier example, we collected $1.10 in net premium, so our breakeven point is $56.90 (the difference between $58.00 and $1.10).

There is also a potential breakeven point to the upside. Ideally with a Jade Lizard, you collect more in initial premium than the width of your call spread. In our example, we collected $1.10 in initial premium and our call spread is only $1 wide (between $62 and $63).

So if the stock closes anywhere above $63 when the options expire, your put will be worthless and your call spread will cost you $1 to close out, or $100 per set of contracts. That will leave you with a profit of $10 per set of contracts.

Exit Strategy

The exit strategy for a Jade Lizard involves purchasing back the options you sold using a buy to close order. When setting up the trade, it’s a good idea to set target profit at which you would buy back the options.

In our example, where we received $1.10 per share, you might look to close out the Jade Lizard when you could buy your options back for around $0.55 per share, 50% of the initial premium you received. The options may decline in value due to movement of the underlying stock, or time decay as the options get closer to their expiration.

Maintaining a Jade Lizard

A Jade Lizard is not a set-it-and-forget-it options strategy. Because of the unlimited downside risk, you’ll want to monitor your position, especially if the price of the underlying stock starts to go down. In that scenario, you may want to close out your position or roll down the strike prices of your short call spread.

Homeowners insurance is not quite as simple as paying each month and then, if something bad happens, the insurance company will automatically cover it all. Generally speaking, you’ll still be on the hook for a certain amount of money if and when the time comes to file a claim. That amount is called your homeowners insurance deductible, and you do get some leeway when it comes to choosing it.

Here’s what you need to know about homeowners insurance deductibles, and how to decide on an amount that’s right for you.

What Is a Homeowners Insurance Deductible?


A homeowners insurance deductible is the amount of money you’ll pay out of pocket when you file a claim for damage repair or replacement. In other words, it’s your portion of the responsibility for the expense.

For example, say your home weathers a windstorm and sustains roof damage to the tune of $10,000. If your deductible is $1,000, you’ll pay that much toward covering the repair cost, and the insurance company will pay the remaining $9,000.

Keep in mind that your deductible is distinct from your insurance premium, which is the amount you pay on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis, regardless of whether or not you’re filing a claim, to keep the policy active.

Types of Homeowners Insurance Deductibles


Homeowners’ insurance deductibles can be calculated in a variety of different ways. The two most common are flat deductibles and percentage deductibles.

Flat Deductible


A flat deductible, as its name suggests, is one that’s charged as a flat fee regardless of the full price of the damage. In our roof damage example above, the flat deductible is $1,000.

Indeed, $1,000 is a pretty standard deductible for those who choose a flat homeowners insurance deductible, though lower deductibles ($500) and higher deductibles ($2,000) are also available. Of course, like any other insurance product, the lower your deductible is, the higher your monthly premiums will be — and vice versa. It’s important (and often challenging!) to strike a balance between ample coverage and affordability.

Percentage Deductible


Percentage deductibles are those that are assessed as a percentage of the total insurance coverage amount on your home.

For example, if your home is covered for up to $350,000 and your deductible is 1%, you’d be on the hook for up to $3,500 if you filed a claim. Percentage deductibles tend to start around 1% and go up to 10% of the total home coverage value. The higher the percentage, the lower your monthly premiums — but consider that even 3% of that $350,000 total is $10,500. Again, it’s a balancing act.

What Is a Disaster Deductible?


It’s important to bear in mind that standard homeowners insurance policies don’t cover everything. Generally, eligible claims are limited by the named perils in your policy document — perils that include vehicular damage, theft, falling objects, and many other occurrences, but not major disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes and floods.

If you live in an area prone to these events, you’ll likely need to purchase additional insurance coverage specifically in case they occur — and the deductibles for these disasters work a little differently than standard homeowners deductibles do. Always review your insurance paperwork to ensure you know exactly how your policy works, but here are some general rules around what you might expect when it comes to disaster deductibles.

•  Hurricane deductibles may be a reality in your life if you live along the Atlantic coast, especially in states like Florida and Louisiana that are very prone to these massive storms. It’s complicated, though, because most standard homeowners insurance policies do cover some amount of wind and storm damage — so the deductible you’ll be responsible for will depend on how the insurance company assesses and documents the damage. In many cases, hurricane insurance requires policyholders to have a percentage deductible rather than a flat deductible, which could mean higher out-of-pocket expenses if extreme damage occurs.

•  Wind damage deductibles may apply to those who live in Tornado Alley and other areas that frequently experience extreme windstorms. Similar to hurricane insurance, most standard homeowners policies do include some wind damage coverage, so your experience will depend on how the damage is coded by the insurer. This type of insurance is another where the deductible is typically paid in a percentage (usually 1%-5% of the total home insurance coverage value).

•  Flood insurance deductibles vary by state and insurance company, and you’ll likely be able to choose between a flat deductible and a percentage deductible. Even if you don’t think you live in an area that’s particularly prone to floods, you might consider purchasing this additional insurance, which is not included in most standard homeowners policies. According to the Insurance Information Institute , approximately 90% of natural disasters in the United States involve flooding, which can cause catastrophic (and very expensive) damage quickly.

•  Earthquake insurance deductibles vary depending on your state and location, but are another that is paid by percentage — a percentage that might be as high as 20% of the replacement value of your home. States with high earthquake risks may set a minimum deductible of 10% of the home replacement value, which is expensive… but a lot less expensive than rebuilding the whole home yourself out-of-pocket, which you might just have to do in the case of a serious earthquake.

How to Choose the Right Deductible


Now that we’ve covered different homeowners insurance deductibles, we come to the fun (or not-so-fun) part: how do you figure out which type and level to choose?

Understanding How Your Deductible Affects Your Premium


As with all insurance products, the basic equation comes down to how much you can afford to pay on a regular, ongoing basis versus how much you might be able to afford to pay in the event you need to file a claim.

Higher deductibles mean lower premiums, but more out-of-pocket costs when something goes wrong. On the other hand, higher premiums might be harder to keep up with month to month but mean that in the event of a disaster, you’re more likely to have fuller coverage.

Keep in mind, too, that your home is likely to be your single largest asset; losing it (or seeing its value depreciate steeply) could quickly decimate your overall financial wellness and net worth. For that reason, it’s usually a good idea to opt for fairly substantial homeowners insurance coverages, even if you’re not required to do so by your mortgage lender.

There are layers to cryptocurrency. Services, products, even nascent legal systems can be built on top of and within blockchains. For example, a whole range of cryptocurrency types are built on Ethereum and its blockchain, including something that combines services, products, and legal system — in fact, it’s a whole virtual world.

That’s the idea behind LAND, a non-fungible token (NFT) that’s the basis of the “land” in Decentraland, a virtual game world built on cryptocurrency. To get LAND you need MANA, the cryptocurrency of Decentraland — and quite literally the coin of the realm. Except this realm is governed by…well not by any one person exactly. After all, it’s Decentraland, not Centraland.

What is Decentraland (MANA)?

MANA is the currency that is used in Decentraland . Decentraland is made up of LAND, non-fungible digital plots of virtual space (or land) that make up the game. The developers of Decentraland created a fixed amount of land, encouraging users to “develop” what they have and thereby creating a market for the currency used to transact with it, MANA. Also, because LAND is a type of NFT, any individual parcel can not be replicated or duplicated. LAND first went up for sale in December, 2017 and since January the land has been owned by “participants” in Decentraland.

LAND isn’t the only asset available within the Decentraland universe — one can also buy virtual goods using MANA in the Decentraland Marketplace. These include “wearables” like virtual clothing as well as names that are unique within Decentraland.

MANA Price

As of late September 2021 the price of MANA was around 70 cents.

Like many cryptocurrencies, the value of MANA is quite volatile, with the price changing substantially over time. Anticipating and dealing with the rapid and extreme change in prices is one of the basics of investing in crypto.

According to CoinMarketCap , MANA is the 78th most valuable cryptocurrency with a “market cap” or total value of just under $1.2 billion. Like many cryptocurrencies, MANA shot up in price earlier this year, jumping from 25 cents to just over a dollar in less than a month starting in late February. It fell and rose again, getting as high as $1.57 in early May.

History of Decentraland

The Decentraland white paper — the official founding document of the cryptocurrency that explains its purpose and the technical specifications for it — was published in early 2017, several months before the virtual universe and its MANA cryptocurrency came into being.

The main idea behind Decentraland is that thanks to the proliferation of cell phones and computers, many people are in a kind of “virtual world” most of the time anyway. Decentraland positions itself as a 3D as opposed to 2D interface.

True to the ethos of cryptocurrency that animates everything from how Bitcoin mining works to the skepticism around some crypto regulations, let alone crypto taxes, another animating concept behind Decentraland was that as opposed to other virtual worlds — think Second Life, World of Warcraft, Fortnite — there would be no central authority in charge of it.

The group behind the white paper got started in 2015 and started working on a 2D grid that they referred to as Decentraland’s “Stone Age”. Another prototype was the “Bronze Age” and the public launch would be its “Iron Age”. Soon after the white paper, Decentraland was able to raise over $20 million in an initial coin offering.

A total of 2.8 billion MANA tokens have been in circulation since September 2017. There’s a maximum total supply of about 2.2 billion MANA coins; this, combined with the fixed amount of LAND tokens, is designed to avoid runaway or unpredictable devaluation of the assets within Decentraland, as can be an issue with other “currencies” like airline miles, for example. Instead of devaluation through inflation, there’s actually been some increased valuation of MANA through deflation.

How Does the MANA Coin Work?

The MANA coin works as a token on the Ethereum blockchain. This means that the Decentraland token MANA requires Ethereum and its token, Ether, to be purchased and exchanged.

To do this, the first step is connecting your crypto wallet holding Ether to the Decentralized marketplace . Once you exchange Ether for MANA, you can then use MANA to purchase items within Decentraland, including parcels of land.

How and Where to Buy MANA Crypto

There are a few different ways to buy MANA — both of which will be familiar to anyone who’s looked into investing in most other types of crypto.

While that may sound like a far-off concept, achieving financial stability often isn’t as far off as many people think. The key to getting there is to think about your short- and long-term financial goals, and then devise a savings plan that can help you reach them.

Here are five steps that could help you achieve financial security.

1. Setting Goals

Financial goal-setting can be like jumping ahead to the last chapter of a book.

Financial goal-setting can be like jumping ahead to the last chapter of a book. It starts with the endgame, such as paying for kids’ college, traveling, buying or renovating a home, or getting a new car.

From there, “reading” goes backward by breaking those goals into bite-size steps until the arrival at Chapter 1—an overview of the current situation and a plan to meet those long-term goals.

Short-term financial goals could include things like paying off credit card debt, student loans or car loans, saving for a downpayment on a home or a car, or growing an emergency fund (more on that below).

Once those are achieved, money you were setting aside each month for those goals could be shifted into longer-term planning, such as retirement, buying or upgrading a home, paying off a mortgage, or investing.

No matter how long it takes, checking something off a goals list can be a huge feeling of accomplishment, as well as motivation to start the next chapter.

2. Creating a Budget

One of the most important things you can do to achieve financial security is to live on less than you earn, since this enables you to siphon some of your income into saving towards your financial goals each month.

A great first step is to set up, or fine-tune, a monthly budget. To do this, you’ll want to grab the last few months of financial statements and pay stubs, then use them to determine what your average monthly take-home (after tax) income is, and what your average monthly spending looks like.

If you find that your spending is equal to, or exceeding, your income, you may then want to drill down into exactly where your money is going each month. You can start by making a list of essential expenses (rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, car payments, groceries) and nonessential expenses (clothing, dining out, entertainment).

It’s often easiest to cut back spending in the nonessentials category. You might decide to cook more meals at home instead of eating out, for example. Or, you might cancel a streaming service or quit the gym and work out at home.

The money you free up can then be put into savings every month for your future goals.

3. Attacking Debt

If those monthly high-interest credit card payments didn’t exist, where would that money go instead? Paying off debt could free up a potentially big chunk of money to put toward those big dreams. Creating a debt-payoff strategy can be an essential part of a financial wellness plan.

One popular method for getting out of debt is the debt snowball. This calls for listing debts from smallest to largest amounts owed, then paying any extra money you have each month towards the smallest debt (while paying the minimum on the others). When that debt is paid off, you move on to the next smallest debt, and so on.
