FAQs

The SCRA is a law created to provide extra protections for servicemembers in the event that legal or financial transactions adversely affect their rights during military or uniformed service. These protections enable service members to devote their entire energy to the defense needs of the nation.
Service members may be eligible to receive SCRA benefits on their eligible products only if they have the product PRIOR to being called to active duty.
The Military Lending Act (MLA) should not be confused with the requirements under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA).

None of the provisions or requirements of SCRA are affected by the MLA. While the SCRA covers eligible products opened by a service member PRIOR to his or her term of active duty military service, the MLA provides benefits to credit accounts opened by a service member (or another covered borrower) DURING the service member’s term of active duty military service.

SoFi has already covered you for MLA benefits at the time you originated your loan
SCRA provides various benefits to service members during active duty including a maximum interest rate of 6% ONLY on debt incurred PRIOR to entering active duty, protections against default judgements, repossessions, as well as foreclosure. To learn more, visit the Department of Justice website.
If a service member’s spouse, domestic partner, or dependent opens an account and the service member is then called to active duty, SoFi will extend the benefits to the borrower when required by individual states.
For debt incurred prior to entering active duty, the maximum interest rate of 6% is applied on the active-duty start date and the payments will be reduced to reflect the reduced interest rate.
Documentation for SCRA benefits may include the following:

• A copy of the member(s) official military orders
• A letter from the member(s) commanding officer on military letterhead
• Any form of official notification of active duty military service
